Charge Score 5 for First Home Win of Season Against Goldeneyes
For their second home game of the season, the Ottawa Charge took on the Vancouver Goldeneyes on November 26. Ottawa was looking for their first win of the season after being shut out on home ice in their game against the New York Sirens on Saturday.
The game started rather eventfully, with Emma Greco earning a five-minute major and a ten-minute game misconduct for an illegal check to the head. The penalty was served by Katie Chan.
Just 14 seconds in, Brianne Jenner scored the game’s first goal on a play from Gabbie Hughes and Rory Guilday. The Charge kept their momentum, earning quite a few shots in the remaining penalty minutes and much of the period.
Late in the first, Anna Meixner took a cross checking penalty, but the Goldeneyes were unable to score on the advantage.
The Charge once again took control of the second period. That is, until Anna Shokhina was awarded a two-minute tripping penalty. The Goldeneyes grabbed hold of the momentum for a bit, but Charge goaltender, Gwenyth Philips held her ground.
An excellent zone re-entry by Stephanie Markowski sent the puck to Gabbie Hughes in the Vancouver zone. The puck was then passed to Mannon McMahon, who sent the puck sailing past Emerance Maschmeyer.
The momentum stayed with the Charge through the remainder of the second.
The pattern continued, with Rebecca Leslie scoring an early goal for the Charge to start the third period.
Vancouver, not willing to lie down, stole the momentum off the following face-off and ultimately earned their first goal of the game, scored by Claire Thompson.
Despite continuing to push hard and play a strong offensive game, the Goldeneyes were defeated 5-1 by the end of regulation. Meixner scored her first of the season and Jenner scored her second of the game to seal the deal, earning first star of the night.
The Charge had rightfully earned their three points and now look to add three more in their final game of this homestand in a 2025 Walter Cup rematch against the Minnesota Frost on December 2.
